It’s Time to Awaken Your Strengths!

My temperature would rise.

I would squirm in my chair.


I would clear my throat nervously…

These were my physical responses every time a job interviewer asked me this question…

“What are your strengths?”

No matter how many times I contemplated this question, no matter how many times I practiced my answer before the interview, it always felt like an out of body experience when the time came for me to respond.

“I’m a good communicator. A team player. I’m a decent writer…”

Post interview, I would always reflect upon my answer. I never felt it completely captured who I am. It sounded so cliché.

I used to think, “maybe it’s because I don’t like talking about myself.” That is true. I am not one to toot my own horn…

But, it wasn’t until I watched a recent FB live that I had a bit of an epiphany: I DON’T REALLY KNOW MY STRENGTHS.

My next thought was: “Oh, my God, if I don’t know my strengths, how can I live to my potential?’



If I don’t know how to identify my own strengths, how can I teach others to identify and to capitalize on their own strengths?

Then I contemplated the impact upon my son Liam, my students, my family, and everyone in my life…



Are you also unsure of your strengths?

Most people spend the majority of their lives trying to correct their weaknesses instead of capitalizing upon their strengths. This is not where our focus should be.

I always tell my students: “we need to work smarter not harder.”

Not that we don’t want to work hard..


I was so thankful when the presenter in the FB live shared a book that has helped him determine his strengths and talents. It is entitled Now, Discover Your Strengths.

  1. The idea, of developing strengths, rather than focusing on weaknesses, is a very goid idea! However—-

    What happens when your bosses 1st and/or 2nd strength CLASHES with yours?

    Is your supervisor or Lead an abrupt and impatient “Activator” when you are Big on Empathy or Harmony?
    Are you strong in being “Deliberate” and like to gave a system when your boss goes on and on with intellection and ideation?
    Do you firmly believe in Consistency and suspect that a supervisor full of Woo is just “playing different parts”, whichever what the wind blows?

    What happens when your boss shows you “a better way of doing things” but all that is, is them “inflicting” their 1st or 2nd strength onto you, when you:
    A) dont gave either one if them in YOUR Top 5 at all! and—
    B) their strengths aren’t-who-you-are—-and–
    C) their top strengths go against your own Natural Tendencies, or strengths?
    These are REAL problems! They can EASILY happen.
    FIX this! No one is talking about it.


    • Thank you for your response! I completely agree those scenarios are extremely challenging. In situations like these, a person has to ask: will my supervisor(s) change? If not, then you either choose to stick it out to see if there’s a lesson to be learned, or look at other options. It is very easy to get stuck in “what is,” and that breeds discontentment. Plus, there may be more waiting on the other side!

      • What would you recommend if someone were stuck in “what is”? What if you were? Whatt would you do?

        When *any* “work philosophy” must believed and tough or embaressing questions are ignored and those who raise them are traitors who are “not really on board”, then that becomes as bad as a religious dogma that must be believed. One is religion, one is business or management. But in both cases there is an unwillingnes to question the “official doctrines”. (And then people wonder why “employee engagement” is such a problem).
